21 Dec How to Successfully Run a Business and Take Time for Your Family
These days you don’t have to choose between having a job or owning a business and spending time with your family. Not only is the concept of the nuclear family dissolving, but work-life balance is continuing to grow in popularity.
Additionally, more and more business tools and strategies are emerging, helping business owners spend more time with their family. Follow these tips to successfully run a business and spend time with your family as well.
Create Structure to Support Your Work-Life Balance
When you run a business, it’s easy for it to leak into every part of your life. Part of this is due to technology. By being constantly connected through cell phones and laptops, it can be hard to take a step back from the office and focus on your family and personal needs.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Many business owners find success in their work-life balance by creating some personal structure. This structure can come in two ways:
- Only work from certain locations. Some business owners find work-life balance by only working when they’re at the office. That means that once they leave the premises, they turn off their computer, and logout of their email inbox. That being said, the time that they are at the office is hyper-productive, allowing business owners to walk away from the office without worry.
- Only work during certain hours. These hours are flexible from person to person, but a good example is only working eight AM to eight PM. Once the time is up and the tasks are complete, the business owner is then off work.
In both of these situations emergencies may arise. It’s important to provide employees with emergency contact numbers for you and to allow yourself flexibility for when problems occur.
Outsource Important Tasks
One of the most important aspects to finding work life balance is delegation. Whether you have a family or not, you can’t do everything yourself (however tempted you might be). It is important to not only delegate recurring tasks but also ad hoc tasks. Sit down and determine what tasks you can permanently assign to others (and trust them to complete). Then, on a daily basis, consider what random tasks can be delegated out as well. Employees will enjoy the added trust and responsibility and you will enjoy the freedom from less-important tasks.
Hire the Right People
When hiring employees, think past filling positions and completing tasks. Even more importantly, with the right employees you can step away from your business without worry. Quality employees will be trustworthy and will have the ability to problem solve. Even more so, they will have the proven aptitude to solve problems the way you would, and, in the event that they can’t, know when to ask for help.
When re-establishing your work-life balance so that you can spend more time with family, take time to review your key staff members. Consider how they understand your priorities and what value they bring to the company. If they don’t fulfill your needs, consider training them to do so.
Invest In and Leverage Quality Business Tools
Your business tools can support you just as much as good employees can! When you’re reviewing your business tools, such as your Point of Sale (POS) system, consider what additional tasks it can complete for you. For instance, a high-quality POS system does more than act as a register. It can also order and manage your inventory, work as a time-clock and training platform, run reports, and more. Many POS systems also include marketing functionalities and apps for sales tools.
When you’re selecting your business tools, consider what these tools can do for you. While they may require an upfront investment, the right tools can streamline your business, increase your sales, and decrease the amount of time you spend focusing on your business.
Enjoy Living Life On Your Terms
The best part about running your own business is that you’re the boss. That means that you can live life on your terms and enjoy the flexibility that comes along with it. If your spouse needs a ride to the airport, or your child has a school play, you can take the time off- no questions asked. So enjoy it! You’ve sacrificed and put your all into your business- it’s time that you reap the benefits of being an entrepreneur.
