While the holiday season can be very profitable as a small business owner, it can also create excess stress and work hours. Through simple steps and preparation you can lower your stress and easily survive the holiday season, allowing you to keep up the momentum year over year.
Get Organized and Prepare
To avoid the stress that comes with the holiday season, both as a small business owner and personally, get organized. Getting organized is a broad term, but, think about it, you have the months and weeks leading up to the holidays to think about what you need to do to keep your business going without raising your blood pressure. Some clear steps include automating, simplifying, and systematizing your business.
What tasks are you completing that you can automate, simplify, and systemize? There are some big tasks that you don’t have to do by hand. With a little bit of forethought and preparation you can get your programs so that they’re running in the background during the holiday season. Some important programs to automate, simplify, and systemize are your inventory, reporting, and your marketing. Many small business owners are able to complete these tasks from within their Point of Sale (POS) system. Take Time Off
To prepare for the holiday season consider taking some time off. Taking some time to reset, and scheduling some time for your employees, will provide you with the energy you need once the rush hits. Once you return to work, you will be ready to hit the ground running, both energy wise and mentally.
Your employees need time off too. Of course, this isn’t something you can guess on- some employees may be counting on regular or even extra work hours during the holiday season. However, as a small business owner, you have it in your power to grant extra time off in advance of the holiday season, or factor time off into your scheduling over the holidays. To make this successful, you need to start asking your employees about their needs early on.
Consider Hiring Additional Staff
It’s ok to admit you need a little help sometimes. Consider hiring holiday staff to support both yourself and your year-round staff. Whether you hire one person or ten, you can ease some of the strain on you and your staff while you’re at work, and can eliminate excess hours for everyone who doesn’t want them at your business.
Keep in mind that you will need to start hiring holiday staff early on. Many individuals will be looking for work as soon as Halloween. Hiring early will also provide you with ample time to train your seasonal employees and build out a reasonable schedule for them.
Stick to a Budget
Marketing and advertising for the holiday season can add up quickly and the expenses can create additional stress for any small business owner. Determine your budget for the holiday season early on- and then stick to it. When creating your budget, consider what marketing, advertising, and incidentals you’ll need. Remember that by starting to advertise early you can utilize free outlets and cut the cost in half. Consider using flyers and posters in your store and take advantage of social media.
Plan for the Slow Period
For many small business owners, there’s a lull between holidays or right after the holidays. Plan for this period. When considering when your slow period, think about how it can be best used. Will you use that time to order new inventory? Is that time for billing? Or will you take that time as a well-deserved break?
Whatever the case, take the time to prepare so that you will be able to use that time wisely and in a way that will benefit your business the most.
